12 FEBRUARY 2012 – The Singapore men’s floorball team won this year’s Asia Pacific Floorball Championships 2012 held in Hanno-shi, Japan, from 8 to 11 February 2012. This victory confirms the team’s qualification in the World Floorball Championships (WFC) 2012, where only two spots are allocated for the Asian and Oceania region.

This year, the Asia Pacific Floorball Championships included teams from Japan, Korea, Australia and Iran. The tournament was played in conjunction with the World Floorball Championships 2012 qualifications for the Asian and Oceania region. The top two teams will qualify for the WFC, which will be held in Switzerland in December 2012.

This year, head coach, Filip Dahlgren selected a young team of talented players to take on the challenging task. The competition was very even with the top four teams, Japan, Australia, Korea and Singapore leveled with 2 wins and 1 loss each after three days of competition. This meant that the matches on the last day of the championship were crucial for all four teams in determining if they would get a spot in the WFC.

The Singapore team stepped up to the pressure and beat Korea 6-3 to seal their place in the WFC. The Japanese team, who had the full support of their fans at home, also clinched a victory over the Australians with a similar score of 6-3. Both Singapore and Japan will advance to the WFC final round with 14 other top teams from Europe and North America (see www.floorball.org for more information on the WFC).

As a result of the Singapore team’s victory over Japan earlier in the tournament, they were declared the winner of the Asia Pacific Championships 2012.

Mr. Sani Mohd Salim, the President of the Singapore Floorball Association said: “Given that the average age of the players in this year’s Singapore team is only 22 years old, there is still a lot of potential for them in the sport. This victory proves that Singapore has indeed the best team in the Asian and Oceania region. With floorball receiving full International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognition last year and the rapid growth of the sport in Singapore and the region, this is one team sport we can expect to see a lot of progress in the coming years.”

SINGAPORE, 10 JULY 2011 – Teams Z-Athletica Red Flamingoes and Albatross emerged as winners of this year’s inaugural Premiership Cup, organised by the Singapore Floorball Association (SFA). The Premiership Cup tournament which was held over the weekend at Yio Chu Kang Sports Hall, attracted many floorball enthusiasts who came to see the top local players in action.

The Premiership Cup marked the end of the local Premiership League, which brought together the top 4 teams of the Men’s and Ladies’ Divisons for an exciting showdown.

Z-Athletica Red Flamingoes defeated Nhac Tre No. 1, 7 – 4, in the finals of the Premiership Cup. They secured their second title of the season after topping the Premiership League table one week ago. The young boys from Z-Athletica Red Flamingoes beat the team of expatriates from Nhac Tre No. 1 with their fluid passing and accurate shots.

Team captain of Z-Athletica Red Flamingoes, McKendrick Lim said: “It was a very exciting match and our opponents gave us a very tough fight. We were undefeated throughout the league so this final win was very sweet and important for us.”

In the Ladies division, Albatross, also the winner of the Premiership League, won the Premiership Cup after a nail-biting three periods against Skools OSB Owls.

Albatross lost their 2-0 lead in the second period when their opponents fought back to level the score at 2-2. Skools OSB Owls, last year’s league winner, managed to score another goal in the third period but were not able to hold back the determined Albatross players from scoring another 2 goals to secure their win at 5-3.

SFA President, Mr. Sani Mohd Salim, said: “Floorball is a growing sport in Singapore and the local leagues have seen an increasing number of teams participating every year. By organising more of such tournaments, we hope to raise the level of awareness of floorball as well as attract participation in the sport as it is relatively easy to pick up.”

Continuing on its efforts to promote the sport, SFA will be organising the Champions League, which runs from 16 July to 2 October 2011, at the Republic Polytechnic Multi Purpose Hall. A total of 12 Mens and 16 Ladies teams will be participating in the tournament. The top 2 winners from each division will be promoted to the Premiership League next year.

Organised by the Singapore Floorball Association (SFA), the prestigious Premiership Cup marks the end of the SFA Premiership League season, which concluded on July 3. The Premiership Cup is an invitational tournament to showcase the four best teams of the Premiership League.

The top four teams from the men’s and the ladies’ division in the SFA Premiership League will feature in this year’s Premiership Cup. Altogether, there were 12 teams in each division, with all matches played at Republic Polytechnic. SFA estimates about 10,000 players in more than 200 schools and 100 clubs playing Floorball both competitively and recreationally.

SFA President Sani Mohd Salim believes that tournaments such as the Premiership Cup will promote the sport, inspire more individuals and drive the competitive spirit among teams in the SFA leagues next year.

“Floorball is still a growing sport in Singapore, with most of the players picking it up in schools and continuing on with it through the SFA leagues.”

Despite the increasing popularity at the youth level, Mohd Salim feels that a lot of Singaporeans still have not heard of floorball.

“I think most Singaporeans would not have known about floorball since it is not shown on television or covered in the media, unlike soccer,” said Mohd Salim. “We hope that tournaments such as the Premiership Cup will increase the interest and visibility of the sport locally.”

Mohd Salim also noted that the Premiership Cup “is a good platform to recruit talent for the Singapore team as it features some of the best floorball teams and players in Singapore.”

On a global ranking level, the Singapore men’s team is ranked 16th and the ladies team at 14th. Singapore is also consistently among the top three teams in Asia, together with Japan and Australia.

Visitors can catch the Premiership Cup 2011 at the Yio Chu Kang Sports Hall on July 9 and 10. Admission is free.
