Floorball was introduced to the shores of Singapore in 1994. Mr Stefan Dahlgren was the man responsible for bringing the sport to Singapore. He introduced Floorball to the mass community by approaching People Association (PA) and Singapore Sport Council (SSC) to bring in Floorball activities in their programmes. Thus in 1994 SSC Family Day, floorball was played in mixed teams and was known as “Streetbandy”. In 1996, Singapore sent its first National team to compete in the 1st World Floorball Championship (WFC) held in Sweden. It was also the first time an Asian nation competed in the WFC. The popularity of Floorball has since grown and is widely played both competitively and as a recreational sport.
The Singapore Floorball Association, SFA, was formed in 1996. Its vision is to drive Floorball to become the Top 5 most popular sport among youths in Singapore and to be a leading Floorball nation in Asia Oceania region. SFA aims to provide the best opportunities for Singaporeans of all ages to play Floorball. One of its main focus is to connect, promote and grow participation in Floorball amongst youth in schools. On a regional level, SFA is also actively supporting activities that promote and develop participation in Floorball among the South East Asian countries.
SFA manages the development and promotion of the game to more than 10,000 players, more than 200 schools and 100 clubs. Through the organization of Singapore Floorball League, National Inter-Schools tournaments, coaching courses and officiating seminars, SFA aims to promote the interest of all Floorball players in Singapore.
The International Floorball Federation, IFF, is the head organisation of world floorball (innebandy, salibandy, unihockey). It was founded by Sweden Finland and Switzerland 1986. At this moment the IFF has 53 Member Associations. IFF is a provisional member of IOC, an ordinary member of GAISF and cooperates with FISU.
